In this workshop, Kimber Riddle will present the treatment of “Savannah,” a young woman suffering from severe OCD rooted in childhood abuse and profound relational neglect. Following the loss of the only person who had provided a stabilizing selfobject experience, Savannah entered treatment overwhelmed by shame and fragmentation. From an intersubjective self psychology perspective, this presentation will explore how idealizing and twinship selfobject transferences within the analytic relationship supported the emergence of Savannah’s creative identity as an artist. As Kimber engaged Savannah’s generative “leading edge,” her rigid defenses softened and a more cohesive sense of self developed. In the discussion, Peter Zimmermann will situate the case within the ISP framework, highlighting the role of the generative transference, how leading edge meets leading edge in fostering psychic development between analyst and artist. Following these presentations we will welcome thoughts and questions from the audience. We hope you’ll join us.
