Female sexuality, from the earliest developmental stages to adulthood, has barely been touched upon in psychoanalytic theory, including self psychological theory. Dr. Rosenbaum raises questions that, if seriously considered, would radically change certain aspects of psychoanalytic theory, teaching, and practice, and would expand analytic inquiry to encompass a more comprehensive range of human potential beyond the cordoned-off territory bequeathed to us by our history and many of our greatest thinkers. The speaker aims to begin where both mainstream analytic and most feminist writing has left off, and will demonstrate that the same blind spot that has obscured essential features of female sexuality has also implicitly discouraged illumination of other areas of human experience that are of major psychological and existential significance. Emphasis will be placed on discussion of this topic in the context of self psychological and intersubjective theory.
